Dear Diary,

Today was one of the hardest days I’ve had in a while. The sun barely rose over the cold, grey streets, and the cobblestones beneath my feet felt sharper than usual. My cloak, torn at the edges, barely kept the chill away. As I shuffled along the alleys, clutching my wooden cup, my stomach growled—a cruel reminder of the days since my last meal.

I tried to smile at the passersby. Maybe a kind soul would drop a coin or two, enough to get a crust of bread. But their eyes avoided mine, as though my presence was something they couldn’t bear to acknowledge. One little girl almost stopped, her tiny hand reaching for her pocket, but her mother quickly pulled her away. I heard the faint whisper: “Don’t look at him, dear.”

By midday, my legs ached from standing on the same corner. I whispered “Help” to the crowd, but my voice was drowned by the clamor of market sellers and horses’ hooves. Someone tossed an old, half-eaten apple towards me. For a moment, hope flickered in my chest, but as I picked it up, I saw it was riddled with worms. I left it on the ground.

In the evening, I wandered into a quieter street, clutching my stick for support. There was a plate—empty—abandoned near a doorway. It seemed to mock me, a stark symbol of what I couldn’t have. My reflection in its dull surface looked more like a stranger: tired eyes, drooping ears, and a cloak weighed down by more than just age.

As the moon rose, I found a corner to rest. The wind howled through the alley, chilling me to the bone. My wooden cup, as empty as my heart, rested beside me. I whispered to the stars, “Tomorrow will be better,” though I wasn’t sure I believed it.
